The Cinema Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan launches a competition for film projects
The "Cinema Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan" (ARKA), operating under the Ministry of Culture, has announced a competition for film projects of public legal entities.
The purpose of the competition organized by the state is to support the development of the cinematographic field, promote cinematographic activities, enrich the experience of local filmmakers, facilitate the creation of films that promote national, moral, and universal values, and support the private sector involved in this field.
Representatives of the film community gathered at the Ministry of Culture on July 17 for a presentation event centered around the competition.
The competition is open to film projects of independent production centers and other registered legal entities of the Republic of Azerbaijan operating in the field of cinematography. Additionally, the competition allows the joint participation of several legal entities.
To be eligible for the competition, film projects must have a minimum of three out of the five main creators (director, screenwriter, director of photography, production designer, and composer) who are citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan or hold permanent residence permits in the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The competition has a total fund of 5,500,000 manats and will accept projects in four categories: films on the order of the state, commercial films, auteur films, and debut and student films.
State-ordered film projects, whether full-length or short features, documentaries, or animations, will receive 2,000,000 manats. Commercial films (full-length feature, documentary, and animated films) will receive 1,250,000 manats. Author films (full-length or short feature films, documentary films, and animated films) will be granted 1,250,000 manats. Debut (full-length or short fiction, documentary), and student (short films only) projects will have access to 1,000,000 AZN.
The first phase of the competition will run from July 18 to September 15, 2023, during which ARKA will accept project submissions. The second phase, from September 1 to October 15, 2023, will include preliminary evaluation and artistic selection by the selection committee. The third stage, scheduled for October 21–22, 2023, will include project pitching by participants to the Selection Commission and the Council of Experts. Projects that successfully complete the pitching phase will be declared winners, and contractual agreements will be signed with the respective participants.
