Azerbaijan was elected to the Subsidiary Committee of the Meeting of States Parties to the 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export, and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property.
As a reminder, the meeting of the State Parties to the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export, and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property is held every two years.
A total of 18 state parties from all regions are represented in the Committee of the Convention. Committee members can be elected for four years. The main functions of the Subsidiary Committee include promoting the purposes of the Convention, reviewing national reports presented to the General Conference by the States Parties to the Convention, preparing and submitting to the Meeting of the States Parties recommendations and guidelines that may contribute to the implementation of the Convention, identifying problem areas arising from the implementation of the Convention, including issues relating to the protection and return of the cultural property, initiating and maintaining co-ordination with Return and Restitution Committee in relation to capacity building measures combating illicit traffic in cultural property, and reporting to the Meeting of States Parties on the activities that were carried out.
