The city of Shusha, the pearl of Karabakh, was unanimously declared the “Cultural Capital of the Islamic World”

As we reported, the 12th Conference of Ministers of Culture in the Islamic World is being held on September 25-26 in Doha, the capital of the State of Qatar.

At the conference, the city of Shusha, one of the ancient cradles of literature and art of Azerbaijan, was nominated for the ICESCO "Cultural Capital of the Islamic World" program for 2024. By the unanimous decision of the conference participants, Shusha, the pearl of Karabakh, was awarded the title of "Cultural Capital of the Islamic World in 2024".

The historical glory of our fortress city, which was freed from the Armenian occupation by the glorious Azerbaijani Army under the leadership of the victorious Commander-in-Chief, President Ilham Aliyev during the 44-day Patriotic War of 2020 is being restored. The reconstruction of the city of Shusha in a short period of time, the restoration of life in this ancient land of ours, the intensive work carried out in the direction of the restoration and use of historical, cultural and religious monuments, and the transformation of Shusha into a venue for international events under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev were highly appreciated by Muslim countries and ICESCO.

In order to nominate Shusha for the title of "Cultural Capital of the Islamic World", the corresponding mission of ICESCO  visited the country, and the construction works carried out in the city were highly appreciated.

Taking into consideration the attention paid by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation under the leadership of the First Vice-President, ICESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mehriban Aliyeva to the restoration of Shusha's cultural heritage, cultural, historical and religious monuments, the Islamic countries unanimously decided to nominate Shusha as the Cultural Capital of the Islamic World for the next year. It is worth mentioning that the Goodwill Ambassador of ICESCO, Mehriban Khanum, provided important support to the process of Shusha's candidacy.

It should be noted that 2022 was declared the "Year of Shusha" in Azerbaijan by the relevant order of President Ilham Aliyev. Shusha is the "cultural capital of the Turkic World" this year.

Today, the city of Shusha hosts international events and large cultural projects. Messages of peace, unity, and humanism are sent to the world from our ancient city.
